Acapulco Travel Overview

Acapulco ("place of dense reeds") is located 200 miles south of Mexico City, along the Pacific coast.  "Aca", Mexico's Pearl of the Pacific ("Perla del Pacifico"), was made famous when celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor discovered the town in the late 50's and 60's.  During colonial times, the port was the only authorized locale for Spanish ships to transport their manifests from the Far East.  But the modern Aca offers a mix of mountains, jungle, beach, and postcard landscapes, as well as a choice of great hotels, day trips, and night life for the visitor.

Acapulco is also known for its beaches.  Acapulco Bay offers some of the most beautiful stretches of sand, including familiar names as Condesa , Hornos, Icacos, and Hornitos. Water sports are plentiful, including swimming, snorkelling, diving and jet-skiing.

What to do outside the resorts:

San Diego Fort - San Diego Fort was originally constructed in 1616, and was one of the original fortifications built by the Spanish.

CICI Water Park - The Centro Internacional de Convivencia Infantil (CICI) is a family water park that offers visitors everything from water slides, wave pools, and dolphin shows.

Cliff Diving (map) - Cliff Diving at La Quebrada occurs daily (check times before you go). Brave (some say crazy) young people dive 130 feet in a small cove just 11 feet deep. They've been doing these death defying dives since 1934. The night show is especially spectacular as you watch the divers carry small torches up the hill for a small ceremony before their dive.

Taxco - Taxco is still reminiscent of an early colonial city, and at its height was known for its silver mining industry. The city is built on the side of a mountain, with very steep narrow cobblestone streets.  The buildings, complete with red tile, and whitewashed walls, sit amongst the cobblestone roads and offer the visitor a taste of yesteryear.
