Gran Melia
Cancun Review
|
The Gran Melia Cancun is designed in the traditional Mayan architecture, with five 9-storey pyramids rising from the sand of the Mexican Caribbean shoreline. The hotel itself sits on almost a quarter mile of beachfront, and offers almost 700 rooms with wonderful views of the ocean and lagoon. It takes 20 minutes to reach downtown, and the airport is a fifteen minute drive. Gran Melia Cancun is known for its architecture. The pyramid structure incorporated in the design is clearly inspired from the ancient Mayan Temples. The entire facility consists of five 9-story pyramids, and most visitors are overwhelmed by the sheer size of the resort.
Cancun’s famous nightlife is located a considerable distance from the resort, so if you’re looking for a good time every night, there are probably other places that will be closer to the action for you. This is more of a families and couples place. The resort is huge and you will be required to walk a lot. In addition, the front lobby only can be accessed after climbing six sets of stairs. Hence, elderly guests and people suffering from back or leg problems may not find this easy.
Once inside the rooms, you can find standard amenities such as a flat screen TV that allows you to view a wide range of channels, AC, a mini-fridge etc. However, the resort does not provide you with any coffee maker or a mini bar. So if you want a coffee, or even bottled water, you will have to pay extra.
As far as the décor is concerned, the rooms are tastefully done and the walls are decorated with artwork. The resort uses Balinese beds that are more comfortable than the local Mexican beds. You can also locate a pillow menu and choose one that suits your comfort levels. If you want to check out the internet then you need to take your laptop to areas such as the main lobby. Gran Melia Cancun does not provide internet connections in individual rooms.
If you love working out, then you should visit the fitness facility available at the resort. It is equipped with cardiovascular, spinning and weight and aerobic equipments.
If you have opted for an inclusive package, then it covers the cost of the non-motorized water sports organized by the staff. Activities such as snorkeling, kayaking etc are organized on a daily basis. But these activities take place in the lagoon area that is not too deep and does not have a variety of flora and fauna. Most visitors state that you should try out the options offered by other service vendors.
Guests at Gran Melia Cancun can take advantage of the two pools available in the resort. The resort also provides a spa facility. Most visitors recommend going through the water ritual treatments, as they are very refreshing. Tennis lovers can practice in the tennis court and the two paddle tennis courts that are located on the resort.
The Nami is a sushi lounge bar serving dishes that are basically a cross between Latin and Asian cuisine. Authentic Mexican cuisine is served at Ku-Nah. Café Quetzal is a good option for having breakfast and lunch. Visit La Veranda if you want to have grilled options. Many visitors recommend trying out the lamb, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. On the other hand, La Perla, which specializes in seafood should not be missed for its paella, salmon steak and prawns. Also, try out the club sandwiches with fries and nachos offered at the Pool bar. Most of the drinks that are on offer at Gran Melia Cancun are local Mexican brands. If you head down to the water, you must try the Coco Loco offered at the beach bar.
The resort offers 678 rooms that are categorized into Junior Suites, Ambassador Suite, Governor Suite, and Presidential Suite. Visitors state that you should preferably opt for ocean view rooms as these rooms offer a view of the ocean and the swimming pool. However, other rooms facing the lagoon actually offer you a view of the busy Cancun roads.
