Editorial Review

Located in the heart of Cancun’s legendary hotel zone, The Royal Cancun is an all-inclusive, adults-only resort.  The Royal has a wide array of romantic endeavors that aim to please.  Plush Royal Beds, in-suite Jacuzzi, special romantic packages and pleasant nighttime entertainment can make your wedding, honeymoon or romantic getaway a truly exceptional experience.

The suites at The Royal are divided into Junior Suites, Royal Junior Suites, Royal Corner-suites, Royal Presidential Suites (single bedroom) and Royal Master Suites (Beachfront Swim-up suites).  The detail and the design of each of these spacious rooms make this resort one of the best in the area.  Rooms have a 32” plasma TV, well-stocked in-suite mini-bar, ocean-view shower and a private balcony with hammocks (if your room does not have one, just ask).  Room service is impeccable and the “magic box” facility is a fantastic feature for the times when you’re not in a mood to answer the door.

Since most of the suites have an excellent ocean view, an upgrade, even if it is available, is quite unnecessary.  The much acclaimed corner rooms are just that – rooms in the corner with an extra window and a wrap-around balcony. They may not be worth the extra money.  But for those who love the idea of waking up to a glorious sunrise or of receiving plenty of uninhibited, fresh ocean air, the corner suites are a good choice.

The resort’s website allows you to select your room of choice and book it online.  If you do, pick rooms on the north side of the hotel (right side if viewing from the beach). The south side faces busy bars – not recommended if a romantic getaway is what you’re after.  An important note: beware of overbooking during peak season.  Just confirm, confirm, confirm, before arrival!

The all-inclusive package offers you the best bang for your buck.  Exciting water and land sports, some fascinating eating experiences, a well-stocked mini-bar, amazing bath showers and enticing nightlife make it a comfortable stay.  A la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided.  In-house sports include tennis, billiards, ping-pong, table games and a well-stocked library.  Snorkeling equipment, canopied poolside beds, cold towel service and nightly turndown service are a part of the package.  There is a special low-calorie vegetarian diet for weight watchers.  The introductory scuba diving lesson, educational wine tasting and the presence of onsite tennis pro are nice touches.

The Royal has a nice stretch of beach with cool, fine sand.  However, the stretch of beach has shrunk owing to the recent storms.  The waters can be choppy throughout the year, as the red flags warn you.  The beach area is comfortable though limited with lots of cabanas and chairs splayed invitingly.

For those who want to swim, the in-house pool is a fun-filled area to chill out.  Lots of entertainment, sometimes bordering on the boisterous, keeps you active.  There are plenty of poolside chairs; however, the ones in the best spots are usually taken by 7 a.m.  Poolside service has some great and thoughtful touches with people carrying cold towels and cold face mists so you can freshen out and providing you with an array of suntan lotions and magazines to boot!

The food is quite diverse at The Royal, and well presented.  With 8 restaurants and a number of specialists on board, you will never go hungry.  From all sorts of egg preparations to authentic Mexican and Asian, the menu is vast.  Don’t leave without trying the different kinds of coffee at the Coffee Shop, it will blow you away.  The 24-hour snack room is another great touch as it is stocked with cheese, fruits, snacks, alcohol, soda and coffee round the clock.

You might want to step out of the resort for entertainment although The Royal puts on different shows in their ballroom.  Things might start getting really slow by 8.30 pm though there is a nightly ‘bar tour’ after 10 pm.  The in-house spa is well fitted with lots of privacy and some great and relaxing treatments.  Complimentary facials are a great way to unwind.  The ‘moonshine massage’ for couples can be a relaxing experience.  Signing up for the Gold Card Service allows you a 10% discount on spa services and gift-shop purchases, though you may be exposed to some time-share personnel who are known as the “Guest Service” guys.

The Royal also provides a number of special packages like the anniversary package, the honeymoon package, the golf package and the spa package.  The honeymoon package comes with a romantic beachside massage or a star-lit beach dinner for two.

The Royal is centrally located, surrounded by happening bars and shopping malls.  One of their most outstanding features is the quality, design and craftsmanship of the rooms.  The lavish suites are nicely complemented by the quality of the Bose audio system, which can make your stay quite incredible.  Take your favorite CD along and enjoy!  The rain-like shower looking out at the open sea is another great feature.  However, the best thing about The Royal is the quality of their service.  From the moment you step into their foyer until the moment you leave, you’re treated like royalty.
