Editorial Review

The Aventura Spa Palace is part of the Palace Resorts family. This low-rise resort, built in 2001, is located between Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya. It is only 50 minutes from the Cancun airport, and 90 minutes from downtown Cancun.

The hotel is styled in the fashion of a Mexican hacienda. The 1266 rooms in 9 three-storey buildings are part of an overall facility whose highlights include a central patio with a colonial fountain, beautiful archways, natural tile floors, and handcrafted furniture. The hotel is situated on over 80 acres of lawn, tropical gardens, and "jungle". The private beach and inlet has over 600 feet of pristine white sand for guests to enjoy.

As the name suggests, The Aventura Spa Palace's main feature is its luxurious spa facilities which offer all of the traditional services: massage, wraps, facials, etc. But the resort is also in the middle of a myriad of other facilities for you to try: water sports, snorkelling, 4 tennis courts, 2 close-by championship golf courses, etc. As well, there is a fully equipped gym, aerobics classes, a meditation garden, and a 10 ft. climbing wall.

Aventura Spa Palace has a man-made lagoon encircled by rocks and full of colorful fish. Many guests recommend snorkeling in the refreshing, clean water. However, the resort, 1 1/2 hours south of Cancun on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is not the place to go for stretches of white, sandy beach. However, a sandy beach is not completely out of your reach during an Aventura Spa Palace stay. A seven-minute bus or cab ride (the cab will cost about $8USD) brings you to Club Tulum, a resort the Palace group purchased recently. Here you cab enjoy two miles of white, sandy beachfront, lounges, and umbrellas, with food and drink service on the beach.

Aventura Spa Palace is divided into the two sections, North and South. As of May 2007, construction to the North will obscure some views, and noise could be bothersome during the day. The North side is known as the quieter of the two sections; as this is the Spa side of the resort, the quiet atmosphere will allow for more relaxation. The scene at the South side is more of a 30-something party crowd. A few guests pointed out the advantage of staying on the North side and hopping onto a shuttle to the South side in the evening – the best of both worlds.

Aventura Spa Palace is a huge resort. Consequently, so people with limited mobility may have difficulty getting around.

Dining at Aventura Spa Palace has been described by some as “cruise food”— you could wind up with a delicious meal or a mediocre dish, depending on what you ordered. On average, none of the restaurants are rated poorly, although lack of variety appears to be a concern. Restaurants on the South side of the resort seem to have the best food and most variety. The Mexican food at La Hacienda has been named the best of any of the restaurants.

Rooms at Aventura Spa Palace have a large bed and Jacuzzi — making for cramped floor space. As one guest commented, “you won’t mind, though, because you don’t stay in your room very much.” For a hotel in this category, the rooms are surprisingly average. However, everything is clean and well maintained.

Comments about the service staff are generally positive. One guest observed that treating the staff members well could avert potential problems and generally improve your overall experience. Tip staff members when they assist you, rather than waiting until the end of your stay to leave one overall tip. The kindness and respect with which you treat them will be repaid throughout your entire stay. Another piece of advice from this same guest: learning and using even a few Mexican phrases will endear you to the staff members of Aventura Spa Palace, who will appreciate even the most basic communication attempts.
