Editorial Review

Located on the lovely beach of Bahia Petempich on the Riviera Maya, the first thing that strikes you about The Azul is its name.  Something  out of the ordinary until you understand that Azul stands for blue – a reflection of the blue waters and the blue sky that make this place simply magnificent.  The resort is centrally located being just 15 minutes away from Cancun airport, 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen, 7 minutes from Puerto Morelos and 25 minutes from the Playacar Golf club.

With just 97 rooms, The Azul is an intimate, comfortable all inclusive resort.  The layout is of several low-level buildings surrounded by the main eating and entertainment areas.  It’s one of the best places to visit in Cancun if you’ve had your fill of sprawling faceless resorts, battling it out with hundreds of guests for poolside chairs and waiting in line for dinner tables.  Rooms come with air conditioning, Satellite TV, hair dryer, in-room safety deposit box, coffee/tea maker, DVD player and port for modem.  Every room has a veranda or a balcony with spectacular views of the Caribbean or of the lush gardens around.  The rooms are a little on the smaller side, but if you like space, opt only for deluxe rooms.  Keep away from building 12 because it lies right next to the restaurant and it can be quite noisy, particularly in the evenings.

Since the place is small, each of the rooms is just a few steps away from the beach.  Also, you don’t have to walk miles if you’ve forgotten something in your room and need to go back!

The food is delightful, but what is even more delightful is the fact that you don’t have to reserve in advance.  With four restaurants and only hundred-odd guests, there is always room in one of the restaurants.  And imagine eating delicious fare overlooking a crystal blue ocean!  You can even order a picnic basket on the beach.  Food portions are a little small but it is presented with élan and you can have your pick of Asian, Mexican and Sushi.  No buffets! T his is not the typical all-inclusive food because everything is cooked to order.  So, they are only too happy to cook something new for you.

‘Heavenly’ is the only way you can describe the beach.  Immaculate grounds, a calm beach and charming service – what more can you want!  Beach beds are hot items; if you want one, better get there really early (sevenish!).  Kayaks and sailboats are available too.  Lots of chairs and palapas as well.  Great service at the beach with sun tan lotions, water, drinks, interesting snacks and cool mists doing the rounds.  A word of warning: there is a nudist beach resort next door. Children straying to that area may catch sights that may educate them well ahead of their time.

The Azul is a great place to bring your kids, and lots of children do come here where they can partake of the kid’s club.  Kids also get their own buffet style food.  Even the pools are kiddie friendly, with the deepest of them being just under 5 ft deep.

Evening entertainment is a blast, but it ends too quickly.  It gets quiet by 11 in the night, which is great if you’re on a holiday with small kids.  Older children and teens may get bored as the nightlife is slow.  For that well-rounded feeling of well-being, get a massage.  It’s a must!  You will be taken to a small hut on the beach for the experience.  On a slightly negative note: there are quite a number of weddings taking place here and the crowd can sometimes get noisy.

Azul is a beautiful place for a destination wedding.  You can easily book rooms for friends and relatives.  Your onsite wedding coordinator will do everything to make sure that your big day turns out like a dream.

The Azul is a quaint tropical paradise.  Great food, homey atmosphere and a wonderful beach make this a great place to visit.  Since the resort houses limited numbers of guests, the friendly and accommodating staff soon get to know you personally.  This makes your stay a memorable experience.  Do bring your kids because this is NOT an adult-only place.  If you want to relax on the sands of a stunning beach and get away from the faceless commercial hub of Cancun, head straight to The Azul.
