Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa Review
|
Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa is located on 2 miles of beach that actually has a view of the Mayan Ruins. Catering to couples, families and kids, this hacienda style unlimited luxury restaurant contains 2 swimming pools, a children’s pool, 6 gourmet restaurants, 1 buffet restaurant and 7 bars. The hotel even has a traditional Spanish chapel to hold weddings.
Getting to the Dreams from the airport is a bit of a hassle because it may take an hour and 20 minutes to reach there. But once there, you will be impressed. The colonial architecture and the magnificent lobby make you feel like you’ve arrived in Paradise. The resort is divided into 2 parts. The new part is called ‘Dreams” while the renovated portion is called the “Hacienda”. The Dreams section has large, modern suites with resplendent furnishing and roomy bathrooms fitted with Jacuzzi bathtubs. In the Hacienda section, which is a little removed from the beach and nearer the lobby, the rooms are a little smaller with a touch of wild Mexico (Mexican paintings and wrought iron). Here there are hammocks on the patios to compensate the absence of a Jacuzzi. There is a vast selection of rooms and if you want a particular type of room, it is best to book in advance. If you like a cozy atmosphere, go for the old section; otherwise the new section is where it’s all happening. A word of caution: not all rooms have an ocean view. You may find it difficult to sleep in the ocean view rooms that are near the beach or bar because of the noise and activity going on. Junior Suites with a garden view are some of the best rooms at the Dreams.
One of the most striking features of The Dreams is the family atmosphere that permeates the place. Lots of laughing, playing, active, rambunctious kids having a good time. The kids club is quite up to the task of keeping children ‘gainfully’ occupied. Even the main pool allows kids. Which is a good thing for parents or people who love to be around kids but not that attractive if you want a quiet and romantic stay.
The food is varied with Mediterranean, Pan Asian, Continental, Mexican, French and Sushi tickling your palate. Not the typical all inclusive kind of food; in most of the restaurants, you are seated and given menus. Another perk: no wristbands to wear! Beepers make it possible for you to while away your time pleasantly without having to check on availability of seats every now and then. They’ll beep you when your table is ready. However, if you absolutely abhor the idea of waiting for a dinner table, go down at 6; otherwise you may have to wait till 8-8.30. If you love seafood, try the tiger shrimp. The tiramisu at Portofino’s is also well worth a try. Every restaurant has a children’s menu. The Seaside Grill is a great place to eat picnic-style with kids.
Entertainment at the Dreams Tulum is a little tame. This is NOT the place to visit if you are looking for a wild, party atmosphere. There are night shows, but they get repetitive after a while. As well, the bars shut down after 12 pm and are not open every night. But the people who run the show really do work hard to keep you occupied and happy. The free bike ride to the Tulum ruins is an absolute must because the Mayan ruins are enchanting and the water there is spectacular. Dress light because your trip starts at 9 when the warm sun is already beating at your back!
A wedding at the Dreams is quite a bargain. Well-planned out and quick, the resort also has some great photographers and videographers. The chapel is quaint and their service is good.
The beach at Dreams is not the “powdered sugar” stuff that they’d like you to believe and the coastline is only 2 miles long. Much of the shallow water stands over the coral reef, which makes it exceptionally good for snorkeling and scuba but bad for water games and wading. Also, one has to avoid scraping against the sharp coral while in water. You may also want to take a pair of beach shoes because there have been instances of shards of glass on the beach. That said, the area to the south of the natural rock jetty is good. Service at the beach is exceptional. Fridays are beach party days. Enjoy!
The pools at the resort get very busy. If you don’t like to share the water with kids, you may be disappointed because the main pool allows children. It is noisy and exciting. But the quiet pool is really very quiet. The spa is worth every dime. Get a massage. It can really chill you out.
Dreams Tulum is only 30 minutes from Playa Del Carmen and just a stone’s throw from the Mayan ruins. In fact, it is the ONLY all-inclusive resort that has views of the Mayan Ruins. Some of its most outstanding features include the facility of biking up to the Mayan ruins and its family atmosphere. The tranquil atmosphere coupled with the Hacienda style of architecture is quite fetching. The resort is particularly popular with couples on the lookout for a superb destination wedding. It is also an all-time favorite with families and children.
