Editorial Review

One of the rare resorts in Mexico that focuses on green development, the Fairmont Mayakoba was built in 2006.  It is situated on the Mayan Riviera about half an hour from the Cancun Airport.  The resort is primarily known for hosting corporate meetings and seminars, and true to the green-focussed development, the resort has been built on a natural landscape, using recycled and native materials.

The Fairmont Mayakoba is the first property of a larger project where 5 luxury properties, along with 2 golf courses, will be built amidst strips of mangrove swamp and low jungles, and a long stretch of beach.

Guests at the Fairmont Mayakoba resort have found everything but privacy.  The resort has 401 guests room which include 34 suites.  All rooms are spread across the property in traditional low-rise hotel buildings.  You can choose accommodations between a signature Cancun lagoon view and an elite Rivera Maya beachfront Villa.

Every room has the ambience of a courteous Mexican abode, with state of the art amenities.  Every room has a comfortable Fairmont bed with expansive bathroom, with bathroom fittings like a soaker tub, a double vanity and a separate glass-walled shower stall.  The large sliding doors open to well-furnished terraces or balconies.  Every room has ceiling fans as well as air conditioning.  All said and done, if you are looking for a quite getaway, a stay at the Fairmont Mayakoba would be anything but private for you. The walls are thin, making it easy for one guest to literally hear the room next-door.  Other than this, another disappointing factor brought to light would be the time taken to go around the resort.  You would either have to wait for your turn with the golf carts, or get around on one of the bike provided

The rooms at the resort features a flat-screen TV, large balcony; several phones, reading chairs, and CD player.  Dressing areas of the rooms have sufficient storage, an in-room safe, and cushioned hangers.  The bathrooms have respective sinks “for Him and Her” with lighted makeup mirror, stone shower with bench, hairdryer, partitioned john, whirlpool tub, slippers, Penhaligon's toiletries, and robes.

Fairmont Mayakoba provides an exceptional range of services and facilities to its guests.  The resort features a health club that has an aerobic floor, cardiovascular equipment, media wall, variable resistance machines, free weights, changing room with lockers, showers, and women's and men steam rooms, lounge, and saunas areas.  Guests can also opt for personal trainers.  The resort also offers classes on a daily basis.

Other than this, the resort also has a Willow Stream Spa Centre that offers rejuvenating spa services.  The spa centre has 2 treatment suites and 20 treatment rooms.  The treatment suites have a private balcony that is handy for outdoor treatments.  The spa has lounges with an inhalation room, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, shower, as well as a meditation area and boutique.  The body and face services are performed by trained estheticians.  Every treatment you undergo at the resort has a Mayan twist.  A recommended treatment would be the Mayan Clay Purification treatments, which has a head-to-toe slathering with soothing local clay.  After which a relaxing massage is carried out, which would complete your treatment. The spa also has special treatments for the golfers and fliers.

If you are a Fairmont President's Club member, you can opt for free gym and spa use, in-room DSL connections, business center PC use, as well as local phone calls.

The resort provides easy access to the El Camaleon golf course, which is in close proximity to the resort.  The golf course is an 18-hole, par 72 masterpiece by Greg Norman.  The gold clubhouse includes a bag storage, pro shop, bar and restaurant. The resort offers to arrange one-day and multi-day events on the basis of corporate or family vacationers.

Fairmont Mayakoba has the Las Brisas Restaurant & Lounge Bar, La Laguna Grill & Bar, El Puerto Restaurant, El Lobby Lounge, Las Olas & Aqua Pool Bars, as well as Café Maya.  With all of these facilities, a drawback that has been observed is that the resort does not have the room to feed 800 guests at a time, which may lead to some crowded establisments.

Social gatherings, conventions, seminars and various corporate functions can be held at the resort.  It has a lavish ballroom that opens to a sun and water filled courtyard, in addition to novel, strategically placed breakout rooms.

Other than being bestowed with the Five Diamond Award® by the esteemed AAA, Fairmont Mayakoba has also managed to earn an extraordinary place at #10 on Traveller’s 20th Annual Reader's Choice Award 2007 issue among the top 15 Top 15 Central America / Mexico Hotels.  The resort manages to mesh both Mayan and European culture in its design and ambience, and guests usually are seen strolling around the resort, taking pleasure in viewing all the natural greenery.
