Editorial Review

Located halfway between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, the Paraiso Maya is a part of the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Resort.  Quaint buildings merge beautifully with lush landscape to resemble a charming village or inn.

Built in 2003, the Maya has all the luxuries and facilities of a modern luxury resort.  The resort is large, which leaves you with lots of room for long rambling walks as you twist and turn along meticulously kept paths.  Of course, this could be a problem for people with mobility issues who can choose to make use of the pick up cart.  There is lots of entertainment for children and teens.  Daily activities include dancing lessons, Spanish lessons, beach volleyball, billiards, archery, table tennis and water polo.  The resort can be summed up with "rreat atmosphere, wonderful beach and lively pools".

Rooms include beautifully decorated junior suites and guest rooms.  Each room comes equipped with air-conditioning, dish TV, hairdryer, telephone, coffee machine, mini bar and safety deposit box.  Junior suites also have a terrace or balcony.  Every building has its own concierge, which makes it easier to make dinner reservations or report a problem with the room.

The all-inclusive option includes food at several buffets and an open kitchen.  Reservations are a must if you want to dine at the specialty restaurants with an assured table 3 times a week.  Room service is on between 11am and 11 pm. Unlimited snacks and drinks available, table wine offered with lunch and dinner.

Food is a bit of an issue if you are picky.  While there is an astounding variety, the quality may fall short of expectations at times.  Which is not surprising when they are trying to feed more than 2000 people at the same time.  That said one of the places you’d like to hang out is the Snake bar that looks a lot like a Mayan temple.

The pool in the kids area has a nice and gentle slope into the water.  The wave pool is a godsend for kids who will keep enjoying the repeat performance every 30 minutes or so.  Since the pool is so large and kids usually tend to congregate near the waves, there are quiet pockets for people who like to spend their time in a lazy, quite manner.  If you want more privacy, use the private pool.  Every building has one.   Oh, and the lazy river lives up to its name and can be a huge disappointment for those who expect the river to be anything but lazy!

Entertainment is impressive with Star Friends keeping adults and young ones engrossed in animation.  A carousel is on at night for kids and live music in the early evening gives your stay a festive air.  Night life is fun but a little slow to take off.  However, when the disco finally starts at 11.30 pm, things start picking up.

Going to the town is a bit of a hassle ever since the Mexican government shut down the shuttle service. T he options are to share a taxi or catch a collectivo.

The Paraiso Maya is blessed with a beautiful, white beach, a tad rocky in places, but it makes for great walking.  Waters get a little choppy at times.  Palapas are plenty but if you want a place in the sun, you’d do well to participate in the towel game.  If you’re a shade person, go rest in one of the huts.  They do tend to get filled up rather quickly though.

For those thinking of taking their vows at the Maya, the place comes well recommended.  The resort hosts only one wedding per day which helps you enjoy your special day to the hilt.

The Maya is something of a paradise for most visitors.  Its beautiful locale and tropical flavor, sparkling blue beaches and smiling service staff make your stay wonderful.  The place is particularly suited to families with teens and small children, as the resort is simply teeming with kids.  It is well-located, only about 30 minutes from the airport and a quick ride from the town of Playa del Carmen.  The pools are beautiful.  Large grounds are spacious enough to allow the luxury of privacy and intimacy, which is missing at some of the smaller places.  In short, a great place to take the family.
