Editorial Review

Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort is a sprawling, all-inclusive luxury resort surrounded on all sides by lush tropical plants, intimate gardens and the beautiful blue waters of the ocean. Romantically lit walkways stretch out into the white sandy beach of the Caribbean and the sheer size of the place is a joy in itself.

2,103 guestrooms are located on the 3 floors of several buildings scattered about the complex. Rooms are huge, with a double Jacuzzi, private balcony/terrace, walk-in shower for two, mini-fridge with top-notch drinks, in-room safes and wireless internet connection.  Deluxe rooms have a king-sized bed and 1 round of golf per day, roundtrip transfers, shared carts, snacks and beverages.  The hotel is divided into the Nizuc (older) and Sunrise (newer and flashier) sides.  Rooms on the Sunrise side have hammocks on the patio.  High speed internet access is available in the business office at $5 for 15 minutes. In case you have your own laptop with wi-fi, you can access the Internet on the north side of the hotel for an extra charge.  Guestrooms have dialup access.

Since the place is so big, small buggies pick you up and drop you where you want to be let off.  Even so, be prepared to walk around a bit because the transportation service may take some time to reach you.  Some rooms are almost 10 minutes away from the lobby!  If the notion of walking makes you faint, ask for rooms close to the amenities.  Also, keep away from rooms in the ground floor because people can see you in the Jacuzzi unless you pull the curtains, which defeats the purpose of the Jacuzzi.

The all-inclusive package includes unlimited domestic and imported drinks, a variety of snacks, a choice of golf packages, non-motorized water sports and free spa treatments.

Food is quite diverse with 12 restaurants catering to guests.  Choices vary from Italian, Brazilian and Chinese to Mexican, Japanese and American.  During the peak season, restaurants tend to be full and a waiting time of 1 hour is not uncommon.  So get there early and get a reservation, so you can relax with a glass of excellent wine before dinner.

Entertainment is first-rate at The Moon.  Tennis, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, golf, cycling, biking, rollerblading and beach volleyball are just some of the activities awaiting you.  You can also take a party boat trip to Isla Mujeres.  The Wet and Wild Trip is another must-do.  There is also an excellent jack Nicklaus signature golf course at the Moon.  “Lake” nine and “dunes” nine at the golf course offer some excellent golfing pleasure.  To find out what’s happening for the day, simply pick up the daily sheet of activities.  Some activities cost extra.  For instance, you will have to pay extra for a “Swim with the Dolphins”.  Note: if you like to take a bicycle ride around the resort, bring sneakers or they won’t let you use the bike.

The outdoor pools are enormous.  In fact, these are supposed to be the largest outdoor pools in Mexico.  Poolside chair lounges fill up by 7.30 AM, so get there early.  The pools have swim-up bars and a kid’s waterpark with shallow areas for children.  The resort has one kid’s club situated at the Nizuc side, which can be a little bit of an inconvenience if you want your children to visit the club.  You may have to be prepared to make use of the cabbie service each time you want to get there and back.

The Moon Palace is also a popular spot for destination weddings.  And some days it can get crowded with up to 5 weddings taking place.

The beach at the Moon Palace is tranquil and serene when the weather holds up; otherwise you’ll see red flags flying which means that it’s not safe to be in the waters.  Lots of lounge chairs wait inviting by the beachside and the white sand is great.

One of the unique features of The Moon is its size – it is a HUGE place, and while some people may find that a problem, there is a certain charm in staying at a place that seems almost endless.  It is best to arrive at the Moon Palace during the quiet time of the year because a resort this big can get crowded and noisy when it fills up.
