Editorial Review

The Occidental Royal Hideaway is part of the Occidental group and offers guests 200 rooms in several two and three storey villas.  The complex is designed in the traditional colonial architecture and sits on 13 acres of beachfront property, featuring two-and three-story villas, intermingled with fountains, waterfalls, and winding rivers.  The town of Playa del Carmen is just minutes away, and Cozumel is a brief 45 minute ferry ride.

The Royal Hideaway Resort has 200 completely renovated guest rooms, six junior suites, and two presidential suites.  All rooms feature air conditioning and ceiling fans, furnished terraces or balconies, satellite tv, with DVD players, and hydromassage showers.  The top-floor rooms have vaulted ceilings, and Villas 27 and 31 are closer to the pool and beach.  Securing rooms on the top floors of these villas will provide a more scenic view.

The Royal Hideaway offers two swimming pools and three relaxation pools, one of which is a cascading infinity pool that looks over the ocean.  If you want a good spot by the cascading pool, you’ll need to get poolside early.  Staff members appear frequently with cold towels and offer fruit kabobs, spritzers, cocktails and, on request, premium alcoholic beverages.

You can get in a workout at the fitness center, a small but well-equipped facility.  Cardio equipment consists of treadmills, an elliptical machine and two bicycles.  Universal weight machines and free weights are on hand in limited quantities.  Saunas and a jacuzzi complete the amenities of the fitness center.  The facility alternates between being wall-to-wall people and completely empty.

You have several sports to choose from at the Royal Hideaway.  Basketball, bicycles, bocce ball, darts, horseshoes, mini soccer, table tennis, and both sand and hard-court volleyball — something for almost everyone’s tastes.  Two lit, hard-surface tennis courts are also available.  For water sports, choose from aqua aerobics, boogie boarding, kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, water polo, and windsurfing.   If you are looking for even more adventure, these activities are easily accessible nearby, for an additional cost: Golf at Playa del Carmen’s championship course, sea fishing, horseback riding, motorized water sports, and private tennis lessons.

Ventanas, the main dining room, serves breakfast and dinner. For authentic Mexican dishes and Caribbean island cuisine, Spices, open seven days a week, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Other diner choices are Palazzo, featuring Italian specialties, and Azia, offering Asian delicacies with an emphasis on Thai favorites.  Be advised also that reservations are required for most restaurants, and the dress code, casual elegance, is strictly enforced. Some guests may feel this goes beyond the point of a vacation — relaxation and spontaneity.  Royal Hideaway's Bar Allegria hosts a theme night each evening.  Vacationers looking for nightlife can also head into Playa del Carmen.

Contact the resort prior to arrival in order to make diner reservations for your first night’s stay.  Otherwise, you may wind up dining extremely early or late in the evening.  On arrival, book your reservations for the week all at once.
