Editorial Review

The RIU Tequila is part of the RIU hotel chain.  Although it is not a beachfront resort, a shuttle is available to take guests to the ocean which is just a few minutes away.  The resort was designed as a small village, and offers guests a total of 664 rooms in the main building as well as several 1 storey buildings.  The rooms have standard amenities like a mini bar, AC, satellite tv, etc.  The resort is surrounded by several acres of lush tropical foliage.  An 18 hole golf course is adjacent to the resort grounds.  The resort is just 3 kms from Playa del Carmen, and 55 kms from the the Cancun International Airport. Hence, those who might be interested in discovering more of Cancun might find the resort a bit inconvenient. However, if ancient Yucatan culture is what interests you, then this resort might prove to be a perfect abode.

The resort is built to re-create the mood of a Yucatan village, featuring a main building and many one-story buildings.  The resort does not open on to a beach, but you can access the beach after walking for about 10 minutes or by hitching a ride in the buggy cart offered by the resort.  Since the beach is shared by other resorts operated by the RIU group, it can at times get a bit crowded.  So if you want to enjoy some solitude, you can try venturing 400 meters to your right.  Those who have visited the resort state that this section of the beach is rarely crowded.

Those who love wild life are in a treat at RIU Tequila.  Many tame animals and wild birds freely roam around the grounds of the resort.  Talking about wild birds, be careful if you are having your lunch. The birds might just swoop down and grab a big bite of your food.  In some cases, they are known to take away the entire portion. So, you need to keep an eye on them. 

When you are out vacationing in the Mexican Caribbean, you should remember that you will be entering the mosquito zone.  Don't forget to some mosquitoe repellent. In case, you notice mosquitoes in your room, you can always contact the front desk and get your room sprayed.

The resort houses two swimming pools, which are split into two halves, i.e. into a swim-up bar and an activities area.  There is also a children’s pool, and complimentary sun loungers, towels and parasols by the pool area.  Sport enthusiasts can look forward to enjoying activities like tennis, volleyball, gym and golf. Many tourists also enjoy swinging the club in the 18-hole golf course located near the resort.

You can indulge in American or continental breakfast during your stay.  If you want to try authentic Mexican cuisine, visit the theme restaurants.  The steakhouse here is quite popular.  As a guest Riu Tequila, you can drop in to any of the bars present in Riu Tequila, Riu Playacar and Riu Yucatan hotels.
