Editorial Review
Meliá Cozumel is a huge beachfront resort that started its operation way back in 1976 which makes it one of the oldest resorts in Cozumel. The resort has undergone many renovations, most recently in the wake of Hurricane Wilma. The resort offers a calm and laid back kind of ambience.
The resort was recently renovated and all the rooms and suites have been refurbished. The rooms are neat, clean, and spacious. However, most visitor claim that the flooring material used throughout the resort is slippery. Hence, you must be very careful while walking, especially with wet feet.
The Meliá Cozumel offers 89 rooms, 46 Junior Suites, 12 Paradise Suites and one Presidential Suite. If you want extra amenities such fridge and minibar, it is better to opt for one of the suites. The rooms have been fitted with amenities such as AC, TVs that offer satellite channels, telephone etc. The beds are firm and a bit hard, but nonetheless comfortable. However, many guests complain about the humid environment. Visitors also remark about the damp bed sheets and linen. The reason being that if you keep the AC on it can turn the moisture present in the air into water and this might cause the bed and other linen present in the room to become damp. Some visitors state that turning on the fans and leaving the windows open can address the problem to a great extent. The resort does not provide internet connection in individual guest rooms, but you can access the net by taking your laptop to public areas such as the entrance lobby.
During your stay at Meliá Cozumel, you can look forward to learning a lot of new things. The resort staff gives lessons on a number of subjects such as bar tending, Latin dance, salsa, Spanish and windsurfing. You can also look forward to the snorkeling classes that are organized in the swimming pool as well as honing your cooking skills.
The Meliá Cozumel has two outdoor pools including a special kiddies pool. Here you can participate in the various pool activities organized by the staff. If you prefer beach water activities to pool activities than you can try out snorkeling. The resort provides snorkeling equipment free of cost. If you prefer you should either bring your own snorkeling set or purchase one.
Though one can go snorkeling in front of the resort, the murky and unclean water renders this spot highly unsuitable. Its better if you go further south where the water is clearer. There you can catch glimpses of barracuda, stingray, squids and jellyfish.
The resort also organizes non-motorized water sports such as windsurfing and kayaking and provides complimentary equipment for the same. The resort also organizes beach sports like beach volleyball. You can also take a walk across the beach stretch in front of Meliá Cozumel. However, visitors complain that the shoreline is strewn with seaweed.
If you want to stay fit and fine while vacationing then why not enroll into the aqua aerobic sessions conducted at the resort? Tennis aficionados can look forward to hitting a ball or two in the two tennis courts. Another popular activity is horse back riding. Right in front of the resort is the Cozumel Country Club featuring an 18-hole, par 72, championship golf course designed by the Jack Nicklaus' Nicklaus Design Group. You can also look forward to live evening programs that are organized in the lobby bar, Fantasia Theater and the Fun Pub.
If you want to try out authentic Caribbean dishes, then you should head for the La Isla restaurant. Visitors also recommend the guacamole served at La Iguana Grill, the chicken salad sandwich, pico, jalapeno poppers, burgers etc.
Best Feature: Flintstones Land is the best family feature of Meliá Cozumel. This themed area provides a perfect haven for kids as they can indulge in a plenty of games and other recreational activities. In fact, you can spot the Flintstones theme in the swimming pool as well as in the garden.
