Occidental
Grand Cozumel Review Kilometre 17.5, Carretera Sur Cozumel,
El Cedral
Editorial Review
The Occidental Grand Cozumel is a 252 room resort which is a part of the Occidental group of hotels. The 11 buildings are designed in a mix of both colonial and Spanish hacienda style architecture, and offers guests a taste of both worlds. The hotel is located beachfront on Playa San Francisco, and is just a 5 minute boat ride from Palancar Reef and 25 minutes from the airport.
If you are planning to stay at Occidental Grand Cozumel, then the location might either be an advantage and or a disadvantage. If you are more interested in shopping and enjoying the night life of Cancun, then this resort might not be the best option as it is located far away, and a fery ride, from the Cancun. However, if you love to be in the company of nature then this is a perfect place. Most visitors say that Occidental Grand Cozumel is a perfect place for families as well as for couples who are seeking a non spring-break kind of a resort.
The main resort building is crafted in the ancient Mexican style. At the same time, the architects have also borrowed heavily from Spanish hacienda style architecture. Modern Mexican design sensibilities are also reflected in the suites, rooms and entrance lobby of the resort. If you have chosen accommodation in the Royal Club area, then ask for a golf cart. The Royal Club area is quite a distance from the main lobby and hence carrying yourself and your luggage can prove to be an arduous task.
Occidental Grand Cozumel offers 252 rooms that are classified into various categories including Deluxe, Grand Concierge Deluxe and Grand Romance Deluxe. If you are interested in residing in a more luxurious room, you can opt for the Royal club area that offers a private pool and a dining area. In addition, you also get additional facilities such as hydro-massage bathtubs, balconies, DVD player and Internet connection in individual rooms.
The rooms have standard amenities such as AC, satellite TV, telephone etc. You can also find a mini-bar that is replenished on a daily basis with bottled water, canned beer and soda. The resort does not provide internet connections in individual rooms. The only exceptions are the rooms located in the Royal Club area. However, you can take your laptop to the Royal Club and wi-fi connect from there. If you don't have your laptop you can make use of the computer room.
The beach in front of Occidental Grand Cozumel is a pleasure to walk on. There are no rocks and the sand is very fine. But before you are able to access the beach, you will have to walk across a small footbridge. As you walk across the bridge, you will notice a swamp just beneath it. Actually, it is a lagoon that was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma and now resembles a swamp. If you enjoy watching wild life, then this is the spot. You will notice insects, colorful butterflies and at times might also spot a humming bird. One can also see turtles, hermit crabs, and iguanas strolling in the garden. The fact that the resort is surrounded by jungle only enriches the animal treasure of Occidental Grand Cozumel.
The resort also organizes water activities such as snorkelling, kayaking and windsurfing. In addition they also conduct snorkelling lessons. Occidental Grand Cozumel also has two pools which are clean and not too crowded. I n addition, you can take part in pool activities such as volleyball, basketball and aqua aerobics. Two tennis courts are also available.
Occidental Grand Cozumel also organizes excursions to Cozumel and Cancun, plus guided visits to archaeological sites in Tulum, Chichen Itza, and Xel-ha. The resort also has a special club for kids and most visitors state that the kids have a great time.
Occidental Grand Cozumel has six specialty restaurants. Most visitors recommend trying out rib eye steak at the Grill House. You should also not miss the beef flank steak fajitas, chicken fajitas, guacamole, pico de gallo, and the veracruz fish fillet during your stay.
Best Feature: The diving tours organised by the resort can be a ‘once in a lifetime experience’. Marine life for the island includes large barracuda, eagle rays, sharks, loggerhead turtles and Cozumel's own toadfish.”
