Deep Sea Fishing in Cancun & the Mayan Riviera
Known for its stunning beaches, great Mayan ruins and pulsating nightlife, the city of Cancun is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. There is plenty of exciting activity all year round, but for sport fisherman it's deep-sea fishing.
Sport fishing is a year-round activity in the Cancun. The wide waters of the Gulf Stream are "squeezed" when they flow between the Yucatan Coast and Cancun. This ‘funnel effect’ ensures a rich and diverse supply of fish throughout the year.
Abundant varieties of tropical fish inhabit these waters and you can try your hand at deep-sea fishing, fly-fishing or spin-tackle fishing. Folks who want to enjoy the fishing experience with their kids can even opt for the Shallow Water Bottom Fishing. But nothing can beat the joyous abandon of speeding into the heart of the sea chasing a shadow racing through the water. When you finally feel the unmistakable tug on your line, don’t be surprised if you’re hit by an overwhelming rush.
Deep Sea Fishing Cancun is the ideal spot to experience the thrill of deep-sea fishing. The lush mangroves here serve as a veritable nursery for all kinds of fish. This is the ideal habitat for fish to breed and you can hope to come across everything from the majestic white Marlin to huge Groupers.
March, April and May are the best months to try the sport. The heavy downpour that occurs between October and January puts a screeching halt to all activities. Summers can get uncomfortably warm at times, though aquatic life abounds in warm waters. In the last days of September, business runs slack and fares hit rock bottom even though there is still some excellent fishing left. The big fishing season begins in January, although things start getting really busy from March to August. Each species of fish has a particular season and is found in abundance during that period. You will find fish like Barracuda, Grouper, Amberjack, Snapper, shark and Spanish mackerel throughout the year. But fish like Marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi and sailfish appear only between April and August.
Some species are endangered and are protected by law. If you happen to catch one of these, you can weigh and measure your fish and get yourself photographed with your trophy. Then you have to release it right back into the waters. Also, only some of the fish are edible. For instance, mahi-mahi, Snapper, Grouper and the Spanish mackerel make an unforgettable dinner and you are allowed to take them back with you.
Sailfish are the number one sport fish in the area. They are well known for their fighting ability, thus making for great sport. The white and blue marlins are huge and they too make a valiant effort to shake you off. The dolphin fish, or Dorado, are popular because of their stunning colors. They are also quite delicious if you cook them for dinner.
Deep-sea night fishing at Cancun is a thrilling experience, and some of the best edible fish are caught at night. Tours usually last for 5-6 hours and start from the Island by 7 pm.
Rated as one of the top ten sport fishing hubbubs of the world, Cancun offers plenty of excitement for serious anglers. The annual billfish tournament falls in May and the area gets crowded with avid fishing enthusiasts. There are various fishing tournaments in Puerto Morelos and Playa Del Carmen in the month of May. Most of the villages have their annual fishing tournaments in the months of May and June.
Locale One can usually charter private boats that carry up to eight people. The charter typically includes tackle, bait and gear, fishing license and soft drinks or beer. Rates vary according to the season and most charter boats charge you by the hour.
Share fishing is the cheapest way to go deep-sea fishing in the Cancun. This way you probably end up paying less, and you go with another party who wants to fish as well. In fact, some charter companies even guarantee that they will not bring their boat back in until everyone has caught a fish! Of course, if you want to catch a particular type of fish like the Marlin, you have to charter a special boat.
One of the best places to try deep sea fishing is the Isla Mujeres. Great sport is not the only reason to visit this area. From June to September, you will see a rare sight here - hundreds of whale sharks swimming in large groups of twenty or more. These gentle creatures are the largest fish found and swimming with them is one of the most amazing experiences of Cancun.
15 minutes to the south of Cancun is Puerto Aventuras, which is just 5 minutes away from some of the best fishing spots in the Caribbean. You can expect to do some excellent Dorado fishing here.
The Playa Del Carmen, famous for its Mayan ruins, also makes for awesome fishing. The geography of the place makes it near perfect for catching the best game fish ever, and a number of fishing magazines have featured these waters. Here, you will find big fish running close to the shore. During the summer and spring season, you can catch sailfish and marlin. A number of world records have been set in this area, and if you’re lucky, who knows – you could be the next!
If fishing is in your blood, Cancun is a place to see.
