Best Beaches in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas is one of those places in the world that has everything – excitement, beauty and pleasure.  The beaches here are just about perfect.  They are wide, extremely beautiful and intensely captivating with clean white sands, turquoise clear waters and perfect weather all the year around.

Cabo San Lucas has two distinct beach areas.  On the West side, you can see the mighty Pacific rolling in to crash at the shores with all her might.  While watching this unceasing activity of the mighty waters is defined as a cathartic experience, any swimming activities on this side of Cabo can be dangerous.

Disappointed? Don’t be.

On the opposite side lies the Sea of Cortez protected by the granite peninsula located at Land’s End.  This barrier takes the full force of the ocean head-on, making the beaches at the Sea of Cortez calm, gentle and full of fun.  There are a number of spectacular beaches at this side, spread between the Lover’s Beach at the tip of the peninsula and the coast near San Jose.

Of course, when it comes to picking the ‘best’ beach, things get a little difficult because every beach has something unique to offer.

However, the beach tipped for first position would undoubtedly be the Playa Medano (map).  The place is bustling with bars, restaurants and shopping areas.  It is THE place to be.  If you love crowds, this is a great place to people watch.  Designated swimming areas make it safe for swimmers.  The Playa is also the hub of sport activities.  Kayaks, sailboards and parasailing are quite common.

From Playa Medano you can catch one of the many water taxis and make your way to Playa Del Amor (map) or the Lover’s Beach.  Water taxis usually cost $20 for a round trip and they will arrange to pick you up at a particular time.  Ask to be cruised by the famous el Arco arch while getting here.  If the tide is low, you can even get off and walk under the arch.  This is an experience few experience and none forget! Swimming, snorkeling, picnicking, photography and sunbathing are some of the favorite activities in this area.  On the beach, you can buy water, beer and soft drinks.  So carry snorkeling gear, cameras and some suntan lotion.  Underwater cameras are a must if you want to capture some great pictures.  A short swim on the side of the Sea of Cortez will see you snorkeling with a wide variety of tropical fish.  If you walk to the Pacific side of the beach from here, you will find a large and empty stretch of beach almost free of all human presence.

The Playa Barco Varado is another fun place to be with activities like swimming, surf fishing, snorkeling, diving and sunbathing.  Dive tours are aplenty.  Tide pools allow you to explore marine life to your heart’s content.  This beach is located near KM 9 off the Highway.

The Santa Maria Bay Beach located at KM 11.5 off the Highway is probably the most stunning beach in Cabo.  A perfect crescent of a beach, it is famous for its pink-tinged sand that is the size of a kernel of rice.  Walking over this sand is an experience you’ll never forget, though it can be hard on your feet.  Hand feeding the fish that swim in these waters is another unforgettable experience.  Bring what you need, pack a lunch and carry all essentials since beach vendors usually give this place a miss.  This beach is a famous spot for stunning visuals so you might want to carry your camera with you.

Playa Chileno (map) is a great spot for snorkeling and diving.  Here, the tropical fish are eager to meet you and start swimming with you even as you enter the waters! This beach offers an excellent opportunity for some scuba diving since the reef extends to more than 300 yards into the ocean.  When you tire of the crowds around you, walk up and past the reefs.  You will find a number of intimate beaches at the end of your walk.

If privacy is what you want, you may want to check out the Playa Solmar.  This beach is located on the side of the Pacific at Land’s End, and access is only through the Solmar Hotel.  Beach vendors are strictly prohibited.  The beach is beautiful, scenic and quite harsh with strong currents that can pull you in if you venture too close.  All you can do is enjoy the majestic beauty of the roaring sea and contemplate.

However, if you love privacy and action, visit the Widow’s Beach or Playa Las Viudas.  Quite opposite to what the name suggests, this beach is replete with great activities.  You can swim and snorkel.  Volcanic formations have formed a number of natural coves, so privacy is not hard to find even when the beach is crowded.

There are a number of smaller beaches lining the Sea of Cortez.  All of them offer a variety of activities.

Cabo has become so popular with visitors and its balmy weather is so conducive to tourism that it has easily become a year-round tourist destination.  So, the best season to visit depends on what you want to do in Cabo.  Fishing and diving activities warm up in the summer months while serious fishing and whale watching takes place between January and April.  September is hot with the threat of heavy storms hanging in the air.

Most of the beaches in Cabo do not have beach vendors.  So, carry what you need.  The sun can be pretty harsh though the breeze from the ocean may fool you.  Bring a good amount of suntan lotion.  The beaches here do not have lifeguards.  The waters here are known for their nasty undercurrent.  Therefore, indulge in water sports and other activities cautiously, after checking out the local weather.

If you follow the rules and carry all the stuff you need, you're going to have a great time.
