Diving in Cabo San Lucas

A primary attraction of Los Cabos lies in its natural surroundings.  And people who are mad about water sports have loads of attractions to look forward to.  Considered as one of the most fertile bodies of water in the world, the Sea of Cortez supports more than 800 species of marine animals.  Here you can find pelagic and tropical fish like whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, and giant manta rays, to cold-water California-related species.

With an abundance of diving attractions, divers who come to Los Cabos to immerse themselves in the pleasant surroundings and get the dive experience of their life will have an abundance of options.  A unique feature of the Los Cabos area is the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes.  One of the favorite diving destinations here is The Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, which is situated on a sprawling marine stretch 60 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas.  The Cabo Pulmo Bay yields the only hard coral and living reef in the Northern Hemisphere.  It acts as a sanctuary for an amazing variety of sea creatures like manta rays, whales, sea lions, sea turtles, and many species of fish.  The Los Cabos Bay's currents are gentle and the water warm enough to have an excellent dive experience.  May it be wreck diving or night dives, deep or shallow water dives, or just watching the sea lions, every kind of diving experience can be satisfied in Los Cabos.  Huge gropers, eels, turtles, and sea lions are common sights here.

Below are some of the best dive sites in Los Cabos:

  • The Point – A great spot for beginners, The Point is situated at Lands End where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean.  Look out for the huge sea bass, turtles, sea lions, and schools of gamefish that are brought in by large schools of baitfish like green jacks and sardines.  You would also come across tropical varieties, octopus, and morays.  Mantas, sharks, and whales are also seen in this area.

  • La Larga – This is where you will get a great view of the rock outcrops with rough ledges and steep vertical granite at 100’.  You would notice that this particular water stretch is thick with sea fans and gorgonians and has of schools of barracuda, tropical fish, and various pelagics.

  • The Blowhole – This is actually a huge opening in the base of rock that is 25” under water.  When the water current gushes into the hole, it moves through a tube and spurts out 10’ above the surface.  This is very often compared to the spouting of water from a whale’s blowhole.  This particular diving site consists of a maze like collection of underwater canyons and rocks.  You would also get a good look at schools of fish and an occasional visit by a whale.

  • Sand Falls – Situated near the Anegada Rock, this site is on every diver's list.  When a sand chute falls down the chute and moves off the vertical granite wall, it looks very much like a sand version of the breathtaking Niagara Falls.  Documented by the late Jacques Cousteau , this amazing site has a depth of 90-130 ft.  It is best suited for divers of intermediate level.

  • Chileno Bay – One of the most breathtaking sites, this bay is known for snorkeling and diving.  You are sure to come across a mesh of finger-shaped reefs enveloped in a coral tress.  This site is home to a variety of sea turtles, schools of tropical fish and varied species of moray eels.  Collections of colorful invertebrates, sea fans, sponges, and starfish fill every nook and cranny of the sea floor.

Diving Lessons

Many resorts and diving schools offer courses for people want to learn to dive.  Just be sure the course is under the supervision of a licensed PADI diving instructor.  Initially divers are given basic training in shallow water and then gradually advanced towards deeper waters.
