Editorial Review

The Dreams Resort & Spa, Puerto Vallarta, is part of the Dreams hotel chain.  This beachfront hotel on Banderas Bay was built in 1970, and offers guest 337 rooms in a 11 storey building, surrounded by lush tropical foliage.  Guests will enjoy views of both the ocean and the Sierra Madre mountains.  Puerto Vallarta International Airport is 20 minutes away, while downtown PV is just 5 minutes.

If there is one word that can define Dreams Resort &Spa, then it has to be ‘contradictory’.  The resort provides easy access to downtown and is close to the main hotel zone, yet it offers a great deal of privacy courtesy its location.  The resort is surrounded by green foliage and cliffs, which acts as a barrier against the outside world.  Dreams Resort is one of the oldest resorts operating in the Puerto Vallarta region and is perfect place for anyone who is longing for a fun-filled vacation with his family.

The resort has 337 rooms to offer which are contained in two towers- the Dreams Tower and the Dreams Club Tower.  The rooms are classified into categories such as Deluxe Room, Dreams Suite, Presidential Suite , Junior Suites and Junior Suite with Jacuzzi.  If you are traveling in a large group, you should opt for the Presidential suite as they are spread over two stories and offer amenities such as Jacuzzi and a private pool.  Opting for Junior Suite with Jacuzzi will allow you to enjoy a private seating area as well as a balcony.

The resort building has unusual architecture. There are two arc-shaped buildings that face the beach.  owever, once you step inside the entrance lobby, you will notice that the entire resort has a typical Mexican touch.  The walls of the rooms are a treat to the eyes as they are decorated with the artwork of local artists.  But the walls may also be a tad too thin, and you can occasionally hear sounds from the adjacent rooms.  All the rooms in Dreams Resort are fitted with standard amenities such as AC, satellite TVs, worktables, DVD player, telephone etc.  You can also locate a minibar that contains soft drinks as well as alcoholic beverages.  Wireline internet access has been provided in individual rooms, with users paying a sur-charge.  Though the rooms are clean and spacious, they appear to be a bit dated.  The resort began its operations in early '70s and hence the décor may reflect the styling of that decade.  Visitors also state that the beds are very firm.  So, if you want to avoid getting a sore back, just request the staff to supply you with extra foam.  You can also place a order for an extra bed or crib if you are accompanied by children or infants.

If you choose to spend your vacation at Dreams Resort, then you can be assured of activity-packed days.  For instance, if you happen to enjoy non-motorized water sports, then you can have your pick from boogie boarding, scuba diving, snorkelling and kayaks.  However, if you are inclined towards motor sports then you can try out the jet skiing and water skiing.  The resort also organizes beach volleyball and soccer.  Dreams Resort has its own private stretch of resort and you can take a walk down the shoreline without being bothered by vendors.  However, you may have to drop the idea of swimming in the water as it may be unclear and muddy.  But if you love swimming, you can always choose to swim in the adult-only infinity pool.  The staff also organizes pool activities such as water polo and volleyball. You can also play tennis and even sharpen your skills by attending the tennis clinics.  You can also try out the badminton courts.  If you do not want to gain weight while on a vacation, hit the gym, which has equipment such as weights, treadmill, nautilus equipment etc.

During your stay at Dreams Resort, do not forget to go out on jungle trekking.  Visitors say it as an ‘experience of lifetime’.  However, it is essential to wear shoes that offer good traction.  Jungle trekking is bit strenuous and if you are suffering from allergies, then the jungle air may trigger a reaction.  Visitors also recommend trying out horseback riding, and since the horses are trained you can enjoy your ride even if you are a first timer.  If you are traveling with children, you can hire a babysitter for an extra charge. You also have the option of keeping them at the Explorer's Club, where activities such as ocean trampoline, sandcastle competitions and arts & crafts are organized.

If your taste buds yearn for seafood, then try Oceana.  Most visitors recommend the smoked salmon and scallop Wellington.  However, if you prefer international cuisine, then head for the World Café.  El Patio, which serves Mexican cuisine, is famous for its roasted cheese.  You can also bite into the mussels, tenderloin and gnocchi offered at Portofinos.  Visitors claim that the food served at Dreams Resort is tasty, albeit the portions are a bit smaller.  As far as drinks are concerned, Load Runner and Mexican Coffee are quite famous. The latter for its elaborate and unusual method of preparation.

Best feature: If you choose to go in during September, you can participate in ‘Dreaming of Freedom’, a program where the guests as well as the staff of Dreams Resort release baby turtles in the sea.
